To replenish Sparx's health, Spyro can roast the wild animals in the area, such as sheep and chickens, which will in turn release butterflies into the air for Sparx to gobble up. With Sparx gone, the next hit to Spyro will make him lose a life. Bright yellow means Sparx is still healthy, blue means he's been hit once, green means he's been hit twice, and finally, a third hit will make Sparx disappear completely.
Sparx serves as Spyro's shield, changing color to denote how severe Sparx has been damaged. Without Sparx, Spyro would easily die with one hit from an enemy.
